Keep calm and carry on: How to de-stress in The City

Take the time, even if you’ve only got an hour, to do something relaxing during your stay in The City.

Whether you are staying in a serviced apartment in central London for work or leisure, be sure to take some time out for yourself. After all, sightseeing can be just as tiring as a day in the office and there are plenty of opportunities to relax in The City. Here are some ideas for taking a moment to de-stress.

Take a break at the Barbican

The Barbican Centre may be a lively concert venue and theatre, but it has many spaces that perform different roles. Those in need of a bit of relaxation may wish to head for the music library for some soothing sounds or perhaps the indoor tropical conservatory to take inspiration from nature. Even outside, the traffic-free area surrounding the Barbican has peaceful walkways to explore and is home to St Giles’ Cripplegate church, where peaceful reflection can be sought.


Ponder in Postman’s Park

Nothing will give you a better sense of peace than visiting the Watts Memorial in Postman’s Park. This little shrine to acts of bravery carried out by everyday people dates back to 1900 and can be found in a tranquil little corner of The City that acts as the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle outside.

Walk any weariness away

On a fine day in The City, walking is a great way to feel relaxed, as there are plenty of scenic routes to enjoy. You can go from park to park, take in some of the area’s most famous buildings or stroll along the riverbank next to the Thames. All you need is some sturdy shoes and you can be off. Limber up in your lunch break

It’s worth throwing in your yoga pants when packing for your trip to London, as there are plenty of opportunities to de-stress with a few stretches and some mindful breathing. It’s amazing how a yoga class can refresh your mind and make your body feel infinitely better at the same time. There are loads of classes held throughout The City, with some even designed to fit into a busy day and therefore run at lunchtime. Take in some classical music

The City Music Foundation runs a concert series throughout the year, allowing you to hear some fantastic pieces that are bound to make your cares float away. What’s more, many of the performances are in stunning locations, making them all the more alluring. If you’re short for time, then the concerts scheduled to coincide with lunchtime are the perfect answer. These are held in the beautiful surroundings of the Great Gallery in The Wallace Collection.

Enjoy the tranquillity of the library

Visitors to The City of London are spoilt for choice when it comes to wonderful, old libraries that are well-used, but remain peaceful. Pick from the Guildhall Library, Bishopsgate Library and St Bride Foundation Library to read a book, get on with a quiet task or select an item from one of the many collections housed within these walls.


Hit the gym
